Best First Move in Tic Tac Toe

Against perfect play, the first move does not win the game. Center and corner both draw if both players continue correctly. A side-cell opening is weaker: perfect O can still draw, but X has given away the positions that create the most forks.
Center
Center is the simplest first move to play well. You touch four lines immediately. If O answers on a side, you can often grab a corner and start fork ideas. If O answers in a corner, stay on the priority list and you will draw.
Corner
A corner opening is the one that punishes sloppy replies. If O does not take the center, X has a forced path to a fork. That is why corner-first feels 'stronger' in schoolyards. It is not stronger against Hard AI. It is meaner against someone who likes side squares.
Side
Opening on a side cell is the only first move you should avoid on purpose. You sit on two lines instead of three or four. You also make the center-and-corners plan easier for O.
What we will publish later
Duetly records anonymized first-move counts from finished games. When that dataset is large enough, we will publish it as an original-data article and label it as our own log — not as a universal human truth. Until then, do not trust viral charts that never name a source.
Try both openings yourself: Tic Tac Toe vs computer on Hard will draw either corner or center if you do not blunder. Then send a friend the online invite and see which opening they mishandle.
